Rhino Rift

Deep underground near Cheddar lies one of Somerset's lesser-known cave systems, where tight passages and dramatic formations create an altogether different experience from the famous gorge above. Rhino Rift demands proper caving kit and a healthy dose of determination - this isn't your average tourist cave with handrails and electric lighting.

Adventurous types will love the challenge of squeezing through narrow rifts and scrambling over boulders in complete darkness. The cave gets its name from the distinctive rock formations that supposedly resemble a rhino's hide, though you'll need a good imagination and a decent headtorch to spot the resemblance. Families with young children should probably stick to Cheddar's show caves instead.

Being so close to Cheddar means you can easily combine underground exploration with a stay at one of the nearby holiday parks. Cheddar Woods Resort & Spa sits just over two miles away, while several caravan sites dot the area if you fancy something more traditional. The location works brilliantly for a Somerset adventure holiday - you're within easy reach of the Mendip Hills for walking and plenty of other caves if you catch the underground bug.
