Roman Army Museum

The Roman Army Museum sits right on Hadrian's Wall, a few miles outside Haltwhistle, and it's genuinely one of the best ways to understand what life was actually like for the soldiers garrisoned here nearly 2,000 years ago. You get proper artifacts - weapons, tools, writing tablets - rather than just reading about Romans in a textbook. The museum does a smart job of explaining the day-to-day grind: the food rations, the drills, the sheer tedium of frontier duty punctuated by sudden violence.

It's worth allowing a good couple of hours here, especially if you're not rushed. Kids tend to engage well because there are interactive elements and the storytelling focuses on actual people rather than abstract history. If you're staying at one of the nearby sites - Hadrian's Wall Campsite is excellent and just four miles away - you can easily make this part of a wider Wall visit without overdoing it in a single day.

The museum complements the physical remains of the Wall itself, which you can walk along nearby. On its own it's solid but not spectacular. Combined with a walk along the actual fortifications, though, and you've got something that clicks into place. Haltwhistle makes a convenient base for exploring this section of the Wall, and the camping options in the area are genuinely good - particularly Herding Hill Farm if you fancy a bit of comfort alongside your Roman history.

Go when the weather's decent if possible. There's not much shelter between the museum and the Wall itself.
