Rough Coppice

The woodland around Rough Coppice, just outside Bromyard, is proper walking territory - the sort of place where you can lose a couple of hours without thinking about it. It's mixed deciduous forest with a decent network of paths, though nothing particularly dramatic or marked with fanfare. You'll find bluebells in spring if you time it right, decent canopy cover in summer, and that satisfying crunch of leaves underfoot come autumn.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination in itself - no visitor centre, no facilities that I could find, no paid admission either as far as I can tell. But if you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby (Brook House Woods is barely a mile away), it's a genuine alternative to sitting around the holiday home. Families with older kids who don't need entertainment every five minutes will be fine here; younger ones might get restless after an hour without a clear "destination" to reach.

Timing-wise, go when it's dry underfoot. Winter can be boggy in patches, and there's not much shelter if the weather turns. Spring and early summer are ideal. From Bromyard, it's an easy drive, and you could string together a proper walking day by combining this with other local woodland. It's one of those understated Herefordshire forests that rewards a bit of effort but won't blow your mind.
