Round Hill

Standing at 444 metres, this modest fell offers surprisingly rewarding views across Teesdale without the crowds you'll find on Yorkshire's better-known peaks. The walk up from Barnard Castle takes about an hour each way, following well-marked footpaths that can get muddy after rain but are generally manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness.

Families with older children will find it a proper little adventure, though the gradient might test younger legs on the final approach. Keen walkers often use Round Hill as a warm-up before tackling the higher fells further west, or combine it with a circuit taking in the surrounding moorland.

From the summit, you'll get cracking views south towards the Yorkshire Dales and north across the Durham countryside. It's particularly lovely on clear winter days when the light picks out every detail of the landscape below. The whole outing takes around three hours including time at the top.

Staying at one of the holiday parks around Barnard Castle puts you within easy reach - Leekworth Caravan Park and Mickleton Mill are both under four miles away. After the walk, Barnard Castle itself is well worth exploring, with its impressive medieval ruins and the fascinating Bowes Museum just a short drive from most of the local caravan sites.
