Round Plantation

A proper forest walk rather than a manicured tourist trap, Round Plantation sits just outside Castle Douglas and delivers straightforward woodland rambling without fuss. The plantation itself is what you'd expect - dense conifer forest with a network of paths that wind through the trees, offering decent shade and the occasional glimpse of clearings. It's the sort of place where you'll actually hear birds rather than crowds.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The paths are manageable for families with older kids, though it's not somewhere you'd push a pram with any confidence. Allow an hour to ninety minutes to properly explore without rushing. The forest floor can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are sensible. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water if you're making a day of it.

For a park holiday in the area, it works well as a half-day excursion alongside either Loch Ken Holiday Park or Galloway Glamping - both within easy driving distance. It's the kind of walk that fills the gaps between bigger attractions rather than being the main event itself. Castle Douglas is close by if you need shops or a coffee afterwards, which is handy. Worth doing if you're based nearby and the weather's decent, but it's not worth a special detour on its own.
