Rumbling Beck Cave

A torch and a sense of adventure are your best friends at Rumbling Beck Cave, just outside Carnforth in North Yorkshire. You're not shuffling along a coach-load queue; you're doing proper caving, which means it feels slightly illicit and genuinely atmospheric.

The cave itself isn't a grand cathedral of stalactites and underground lakes. It's tight in places, a bit damp underfoot, and you'll need a decent torch. But walkers in the area treat it as a worthwhile diversion rather than a main event - usually takes 20 minutes to properly explore if you're taking your time. Families with kids aged eight and up will enjoy it if everyone's reasonably fit and comfortable in confined spaces. Younger children might find it claustrophobic or lose interest quickly.

The cave is free to visit as far as we can tell, with no specific opening hours, which means early morning or late afternoon visits tend to be quieter.
