Scotland Wood

Ancient oak and beech trees stretch overhead as you follow the winding paths through Scotland Wood, a proper slice of old English woodland just outside Ledbury. This isn't manicured parkland - expect muddy boots and the occasional fallen branch blocking your way.

Families with older children who don't mind a bit of rough walking will get the most from this spot. The younger ones might struggle with the uneven terrain and lack of obvious highlights like playgrounds or visitor centres. Dog walkers absolutely love it here - plenty of space for four-legged friends to roam, though keep them on leads during nesting season.

Birdwatchers should bring binoculars. I spotted woodpeckers, nuthatches and the occasional buzzard circling overhead during my visit in early autumn. The woodland floor comes alive with bluebells in spring, making it well worth timing your visit for late April or May.

Allow a good two hours for a proper explore, longer if you're planning a picnic. No facilities means bringing your own refreshments and planning your pit stops accordingly. It's free to wander, as far as I could tell - no gates or payment points.

Staying at one of the nearby sites like Mike's Meadow Glamping or Yew Tree Farm makes this an easy morning expedition before heading into Ledbury for lunch and proper loos.
