Sgúrr Mhic Bharraich

The walk up Sgúrr Mhic Bharraich isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to catch you out if you're expecting a gentle stroll. You're looking at roughly 2,000 feet of ascent over about three miles, which means most people will want three to four hours round trip. From Kyle, it's a straightforward drive into the hills, and the views from the summit sweep across the Kintail massif - proper wild territory.

This one's for hillwalkers who know what they're doing. It's not a casual family wander. The path starts okay enough, but the upper sections demand decent boots and some scrambling experience. On a clear day though, the panorama makes the slog worth it - you're looking out over some of Scotland's most dramatic mountain country, with the Shiel Valley spread below.

Head up in the afternoon if you can swing it. The light's better, and you avoid the midges that plague Kyle in summer mornings. Weather changes fast up here, so check the forecast and bring waterproofs even if it looks decent at the base.

If you're camping at Glenshiel Campsite just down the road, this makes a cracking half-day expedition. It's close enough that you can set out mid-morning and be back for a proper dinner. The campsite itself sits well for exploring Kintail's walking circuit, so Sgúrr Mhic Bharraich works nicely as one of several peak days during a longer Highland stay.
