Shewalton Wood

Walk into Shewalton Wood and you're immediately struck by how quiet it is - proper peaceful, especially compared to the bustle of nearby Ayrshire. The woodland stretches across decent acreage with well-trodden paths threading through mature trees, the sort of place where you can actually hear birdsong without fighting for it.

It's a straightforward woodland walk rather than a destination attraction with a visitor centre or café. What you get is fresh air, a bit of exercise, and the chance to see what Scottish lowland woodland actually looks like when left to its own devices. Locals seem to use it regularly - we bumped into dog walkers, families with kids, the odd runner. The paths are manageable for most ages, though younger children might flag after 45 minutes or so.

The real appeal here is how accessible it is if you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Sandylands down the road - only about 6 miles away - and want to escape the holiday park bubble for a couple of hours without driving miles. It won't blow your mind, to be honest, but it's solid for what it is: a genuine bit of woodland where you can properly disconnect.

Go early morning or late afternoon if you can. The light filtering through the trees is better, and you'll have the place mostly to yourself. Wear decent boots if it's been wet - the ground can get squelchy.
