Short Wood

The woodland around Coalbrookdale is proper dense - Short Wood delivers that sense of being properly tucked away without needing to trek miles into the Shropshire countryside. You're looking at a straightforward woodland walk through mixed forest, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think instead of dodging tour groups.

It works well for families who don't need constant stimulation - kids can burn off energy on the paths, and there's enough variation in the trees and ground cover to keep them engaged for an hour or so. Walking groups will find it solid rather than spectacular, good for a gentle morning before hitting somewhere with more dramatic scenery. The industrial heritage angle matters here too - you're in the shadow of the Ironbridge Gorge area, so the forest sits alongside all that Victorian engineering history without feeling like a museum.

The walk itself takes between 45 minutes and two hours depending on how thoroughly you potter about. Free admission, obviously, since it's just woodland. Go in autumn when the light cuts through the canopy properly, or early spring before the midges get ambitious.

Camp at Irongorge - it's only three miles away and genuinely excellent - then pair Short Wood with a proper explore of the Gorge itself. Sytche Caravan Park also works if Irongorge is full, though it's a bit further out. The wood alone won't eat up your whole holiday, but it slots in nicely as a morning activity alongside the bigger attractions.
