Shoulder of Mutton

Strange name for a fell, but the view from the top explains everything - this County Durham summit does indeed resemble a shoulder of lamb when seen from certain angles. The climb up Shoulder of Mutton, just outside Barnard Castle, isn't particularly challenging but rewards you with sweeping views across Teesdale and the surrounding moorland. Walking boots are essential as the terrain gets boggy in places, especially after rain. The ascent takes about 45 minutes from the nearest parking spot, following rough tracks that can be muddy and slippery. It's proper wild up here - no facilities, no marked paths beyond the initial track, just you and the elements. Families with older children who don't mind a bit of scrambling will enjoy it, though toddlers might struggle with the uneven ground. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn and offers views that stretch to the Lake District fells on clear days. Weather changes quickly on these exposed moors, so pack layers and waterproofs even if it looks sunny when you set off.
