Simpson Pot

Simpson Pot is a proper sinkhole cave system near Carnforth, and honestly, it's one of those places that rewards a bit of effort. You'll need to scramble down into the mouth - it's steep, so bring decent boots and a head torch because daylight doesn't penetrate far. The limestone cavern opens up inside with water flowing through, creating that otherworldly atmosphere that makes caving addictive even for beginners.

It's not a tourist-trap show cave with paths and handrails. This is the real thing, and that's precisely why serious cavers and geology enthusiasts love it. You're looking at underground streams, rock formations, and the kind of silence you only get below ground. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it slow and exploring properly.

Families with older kids (say ten-plus) who don't mind getting a bit mucky will enjoy it, but this isn't for the faint-hearted or anyone claustrophobic. Walkers exploring the wider cave systems in the area will find this a worthwhile stop. The landscape around Carnforth is riddled with karst features, so you could easily combine it with other caving or fell walking.

The caves here don't require permits as far as I'm aware, but check locally before heading out. Best visited after dry spells - water levels can make some sections dicey after heavy rain.
