Smiths Rodley Crane

Standing tall beside the Cromford Canal, this Grade II listed crane is a proper piece of Derbyshire's industrial heritage that most visitors walk straight past. Built around 1840 by the famous Derby engineering firm, it's one of the last surviving examples of these cast iron loading cranes that once lined Britain's waterways.

The crane itself is surprisingly elegant for such a functional piece of kit - all graceful curves and solid engineering. Railway enthusiasts and industrial archaeology fans will appreciate the craftsmanship, though casual visitors might find it a bit niche. It takes about ten minutes to have a good look and read the information board.

What makes it worth the short detour from Matlock is how it sits in the broader story of the area's transport revolution. The Cromford Canal was cutting-edge technology in its day, moving lead and limestone from the Peak District down to the Midlands. This crane loaded those heavy cargoes onto narrowboats bound for Derby and beyond.

Families staying at nearby Hoe Grange Holidays or Carsington Water campsite could easily combine it with a canal walk - the towpath runs right past it. Not exactly a day out on its own, but a nice five-minute stop that brings the area's industrial past to life.
