Haven Hill

Getting to the summit of Haven Hill requires a proper climb, but the views across the Derwent Valley make every step worthwhile. This modest Derbyshire peak sits just outside Matlock and offers some of the finest panoramic views in the area, stretching from the limestone dales to the gritstone edges.

The ascent takes most people around 45 minutes from the nearest parking spot, following well-worn paths through mixed woodland before emerging onto open moorland near the top. It's not technically challenging but you'll definitely feel it in your legs.

Families with older children who enjoy a proper walk will love this one, though it's too steep and long for pushchairs or very young kids. The summit itself is unmarked - just a gentle grassy rise - but the 360-degree views are spectacular on a clear day. You can easily spot Riber Castle to the south and the distinctive profile of Crich Stand monument to the east.

Allow half a day for the round trip, including time to properly appreciate the views and have a picnic at the top. The walk is free, naturally, and accessible year-round, though autumn offers the best colours in the surrounding woodland.
