Snelsmore East Common

Walking into Snelsmore East Common feels like stepping back in time - the trees here are proper old, gnarled oaks and birches that have been doing their thing for centuries. It's a working common land just outside Thatcham, which means it's genuinely wild in places, not some manicured country park experience. The paths wind through woodland thick enough to muffle traffic noise, though you're never far from civilization.

This is excellent territory for walkers who want actual forest rather than tree-lined strolls. Families with older kids will get on well here too - there's room to explore without needing constant supervision. Bring binoculars if you're into woodland birds; the variety's decent. The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper boots aren't a luxury. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to do it justice rather than just nip round the perimeter.

Free access, naturally - it's common land. Best visited autumn through spring when the woodland floor's most interesting and you're not fighting through summer crowds. It works brilliantly as a half-day break from caravan living, especially if you're staying at Rhodeside Club just down the road (less than a mile away) or Cherry Bird Country Park. Neither offers the manicured attractions those parks usually come with, so Snelsmore fills that gap perfectly for people wanting genuine countryside rather than organized activities.
