Square Plantation

Square Plantation is a proper woodland walk just outside Louth, the sort of place where you can disappear from the main road within five minutes and feel genuinely away from it all. It's a working forest - Forestry Commission land - with a straightforward network of paths threading through mixed woodland that changes character depending on the season. Summer's thick and green and quiet. Winter strips it back to skeletal branches and muddy tracks that can get bog-heavy after rain.

You're looking at a decent two-hour loop if you're not rushing, though you can easily do a shorter circuit. The woodland itself isn't dramatic - no ancient oaks or rare species to make you weak at the knees - but it's proper, functional woodland that feels less manicured than some of the managed parks you'll find nearby. Walkers will get the most from it, families with older kids too if they're not expecting visitor facilities or signage that explains everything. Bring a map or download it beforehand because waymarking can be patchy.

Free to access, though there's nowhere to buy a coffee or ice cream on site. The Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape spreads across the region and Square Plantation sits within that broader landscape, so you could easily combine it with other Wolds walking. It pairs well with the excellent facilities at Lindsey Trail Touring Park or Into the Wild Glamping nearby if you're basing yourself in the area for a few days. Don't expect it to be the highlight of your trip - but as a solid mid-week morning walk from Louth, it's worth knowing about.
