About St David's Head - National Trust

The walk out to St David's Head takes you along one of Pembrokeshire's finest coastal paths, and it's worth every step. You're heading towards a proper headland - all dramatic cliffs, windswept grass, and that Atlantic light that makes everything look sharper than it should. The National Trust manages this stretch, which means the path is well-maintained and clearly marked from the small car park near Whitesands Beach.

It's a straightforward walk of around three miles there and back, taking you past Bronze Age ruins and Iron Age forts that sit right on the ridge. The views are genuinely good - you'll see Ramsey Island close by and, on a clear day, the Preseli Mountains inland. Most people manage it in two hours without pushing, though families with younger kids might want longer to let them explore the ruins and scramble about on the rocks.

This is really a walkers' outing rather than somewhere to sit and have a picnic for hours. The wind comes straight off the sea and it gets properly biblical up there in bad weather. Come on a clear morning if you can - afternoon light tends to wash everything out from this angle. Best time is spring or early autumn when the grass is green but you won't be melting.

If you're camping nearby - Pencarnan Farm and Lleithyr Farm are virtually on your doorstep - you can knock this out before breakfast and still have the rest of the day free. It pairs well with Caerfai Bay if you fancy mixing coastal walks with proper beach time.
