Carn Llidi

The walk up Carn Llidi is short and steep, but you get proper views across Pembrokeshire moorland for minimal effort. It's an Iron Age hill fort, so there's archaeology here if you're into that sort of thing - the ramparts are still visible, which is more than you can say for most British forts.

The summit itself is bare and windswept. There's a trig point and a bench, which is thoughtful. On a clear day you can see towards the coast and Haverfordwest beyond. On a grey day, which is often, it's a bit underwhelming - just boggy ground and gorse.

Families with primary-age kids will manage it fine. The climb takes maybe 20 minutes if you're not rushing. Teenagers might find it bit dull unless they're already keen on hill walking. Real hikers won't stay long - there's no shelter and the views aren't exceptional enough to linger over lunch.

It's free, naturally. No facilities at all. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the few tourists who do make the trip. The moorland flora is decent in late summer if that interests you.

If you're based at Lleithyr Farm Holiday Park or Pencarnan Farm - both very close - Carn Llidi makes a decent morning walk before heading to the coast proper. It's more of a warm-up than a destination. The real Pembrokeshire magic is elsewhere, but this gets you moving and off the caravan site.
