St John's Cathedral

The cathedral sits quietly on a hillside overlooking Oban, and you'll spot its spire long before you reach the entrance. St John's is a proper Victorian Gothic church, all pointed arches and serious stonework, built in the 1880s when Oban was establishing itself as a resort town. Inside, it's worth ten minutes of your time - the stained glass catches light nicely on a clear day, and there's genuine peace in here away from the seafront bustle below.

It's not a sprawling tourist draw. You won't need more than 20 minutes unless you're genuinely into ecclesiastical architecture, in which case the details reward a closer look. Families with restless kids might find it a bit solemn. But if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Tanunda Pods or Maggie's Cabin are practically on your doorstep, barely a mile away - it makes sense to include on a morning walk round Oban before heading to the seafront or out to the islands.

Admission appears to be free, though opening hours aren't widely published online, so don't bank on finding it unlocked outside typical daylight hours. The real appeal is the setting and the excuse for a hillside wander rather than the building itself. Oban Holiday Park, further down the road at 2.5 miles, gives you more breathing room if you want a bigger base for exploring Argyll. The cathedral's pleasant enough, but it's Oban's position as a jumping-off point for Mull and the islands that makes staying nearby worthwhile - the cathedral is just a useful pause on that bigger itinerary.
