St Mary's Church

Red sandstone walls catch the afternoon light beautifully at this Norman church, which sits right in Maryport's town centre overlooking the Solway Firth. The building dates back to the 12th century, though much of what you see today comes from Victorian restoration work.

Inside, you'll find some proper medieval stonework alongside later additions. The chancel arch is the real deal - Norman through and through - while the stained glass windows tell stories of local maritime history. It's a working church, so services still happen regularly.

History buffs will appreciate the Roman connections here. Maryport was once Alauna, a major Roman fort, and while the church itself isn't Roman, it stands on historically significant ground. The churchyard offers lovely views across to Scotland on clear days.

Families staying at nearby Lakeside Retreat Glamping will find it's just over a mile away - an easy walk into town that older children won't mind. The church makes a nice stop when exploring Maryport's Roman museum and harbour area. Twenty minutes is plenty unless you're particularly keen on church architecture.

Admission is free, though like most churches, they appreciate donations. Pop in during daylight hours when it's usually open, though Sunday morning services mean you might need to wait.
