Stang Forest

You'll find yourself walking through dense woodland that feels genuinely removed from the world, even though Barnard Castle is only a few miles away. Stang Forest is proper moorland forest - the kind of place where you can actually breathe without hearing traffic. The trees crowd in on either side, the ground beneath your feet shifts between leaf litter and soft moss, and if you time it right, you might have the whole thing to yourself.

It's an old working forest, managed timber land rather than some wild wilderness, but that doesn't diminish it. Walkers will get the most from this - there are marked paths threading through, and it's the sort of spot where two hours disappears without you noticing. Families with older kids will be fine; younger ones might find it a bit samey after the first twenty minutes. History buffs won't find much to grab onto here - it's more about the quiet and the air than any particular story.

As for practicalities, there's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. It's free to access. If you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites - The Old Armoury is closest at four miles, or any of the Barnard Castle clubs a bit further on - it makes a cracking half-day break from the site. Pair it with a walk around Barnard Castle town itself for a proper day out. Best visited when the weather's decent; mud here gets proper sticky.
