Star Wood

Star Wood is a proper forest just outside Stoke-on-Trent, the kind of place where you can actually lose yourself for a couple of hours without needing a map or a guidebook. It's woodland as it should be - dense enough to feel like proper countryside, with decent paths winding through the trees and enough space that you won't be tripping over other walkers even on weekends.

The main draw here is straightforward: walking. There's no visitor centre, no tea room, no interpretive panels explaining which trees are which. You get the woods themselves, which is either exactly what you want or not what you want at all. Families with young kids will find it manageable - the paths are generally clear and it's not too boggy even after rain. Serious walkers use it as a pit stop between longer routes across Staffordshire. Photographers might find something worthwhile depending on the light and season, though it's not a destination in itself.

Allow a good hour to walk through without rushing. Go in autumn when the light filters through properly, or spring when the undergrowth isn't choking everything. It's free to access and there's no obvious gate or barrier - you just turn up.

If you're basing yourself at Intake Farm Campsite, Field Head Farm, or any of the caravan parks within a few miles, Star Wood makes a decent half-morning exercise before heading back for lunch. Don't expect drama or views - expect trees, air, and a bit of peace.
