Ramshorn Common

Woodland paths wind through this small but lovely nature reserve just outside Stoke-on-Trent, where ancient heathland meets younger birch and oak stands. The common covers roughly 30 acres of mixed habitat - not huge, but properly wild feeling once you're in among the trees.

Families with young children will find it just about right for a morning wander. The main circular path takes maybe 45 minutes at a gentle pace, with plenty of spots to stop and poke about in the undergrowth. Bird watchers do well here, particularly in spring when the woodland comes alive with song. I've spotted green woodpeckers and the occasional kestrel hunting over the open patches.

What makes this place special is its variety in such a compact area. Heather and gorse give way to proper woodland, then open again to grassy clearings where butterflies work the wildflowers in summer. It's free to explore and always open, though the paths can get muddy after rain.
