Painter's Rock

Standing proud on a hillside near Stoke-on-Trent, this distinctive sandstone outcrop has been drawing visitors for generations. The rock itself isn't massive - you could walk past it in five minutes - but the views across the Staffordshire countryside make the short climb worthwhile.

Local legend claims artists once came here to capture the sweeping vistas, hence the name. Whether that's true or not, you can see why they might have been tempted. Rolling fields stretch out below, with the Potteries sprawling in the distance on a clear day.

Families with older children will enjoy the scramble up, though it's not suitable for pushchairs or those with mobility issues. The paths can be muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are essential. Give yourself an hour including the walk from the nearest parking spot.

History enthusiasts might find it a bit underwhelming compared to Staffordshire's grander attractions, but it's a pleasant enough diversion if you're staying at one of the nearby sites. Lower Micklin Touring Park and Alton's Star Camping site are both within walking distance for the energetic, making this a decent leg-stretcher during a longer holiday. Just don't expect ancient monuments or guided tours - this is countryside rambling at its most straightforward.
