States Hill Wood

Walking into States Hill Wood near Thatcham, you're immediately aware of the quiet. No crowds, no gift shop, just proper woodland doing what woodland does best - offering a decent walk without the faffing about. The forest floor is soft underfoot, dense with beech and oak, and the canopy is thick enough to make a grey day feel atmospheric rather than miserable.

It's the sort of place walkers will actually enjoy, especially if you're basing yourself at Rhodeside Club just down the road - close enough for a morning ramble without the drive. The woodland works as a genuine escape from the touring park routine. You're not looking at a dramatic vista or a headline attraction here; this is about spending an hour or two among the trees, clearing your head, maybe spotting the occasional pheasant if you're quiet about it.

Families with younger kids might find it bit samey if you're only after thirty minutes, but older children who can manage a proper walk will get on with it fine. There's nothing fenced off or made "safe", which means you can actually roam a bit rather than shuffle along a manicured path.

With Cherry Bird Country Park and Bishops Green Farm within a few miles, you could easily build States Hill into a wider woodland and countryside tour of West Berkshire. The admission appears free and there's no formal infrastructure, so just turn up. Bring decent boots though - it gets muddy.
