Stubbs Wood

The walk through Stubbs Wood near Edenbridge is straightforward enough - a proper woodland ramble with decent paths that won't have you scrambling through brambles. It's the kind of place where the trees do most of the work for you. Oak and beech dominate, and in spring the woodland floor comes alive with bluebells that genuinely stop you in your tracks. The canopy gets thick enough that it stays cool even on warm days, which is brilliant if you're visiting in summer.

This is walker territory, really. It's not dramatic or dramatic scenery - no viewpoints or dramatic outcrops - but it's exactly what you want if you're after a quiet few hours away from paths crowded with day-trippers. The soil can get boggy after rain, so proper boots are sensible. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it slow and actually looking at the woodland, not just marching through.

Historically it's been working woodland for centuries, and you can spot signs of old management if you know what you're looking for - coppiced stools and the like. It's not going to set your imagination on fire, but it's genuine English woodland, unglamorous and honest.
