Surprise View

The name does exactly what it says on the tin. You round a bend on the moorland walk above Ilkley and suddenly the whole valley opens up in front of you - proper stunning. It's the kind of view that stops you dead, makes you catch your breath. From up here you can see right across Wharfedale, with Ilkley itself tucked below and the moors rolling away in every direction.

Getting there means a decent walk from town - most people approach it from the Ilkley Moor side, which takes a solid half-hour on foot from the town centre. It's not brutal, but it's enough of an effort that it filters out the casual visitors. That's actually part of why it works so well. The path is straightforward moorland walking, nothing technical, but you do need to be reasonably mobile.

Walkers will absolutely love this. Photographers too - golden hour up here is genuinely exceptional. Families with younger kids might find the trek a bit much unless they're keen rambler types. Once you're there, you're not doing anything except looking and maybe sitting with a flask for twenty minutes, so factor that into how long you'll want to stay.

If you're based at one of the local caravan parks - Clarion Lodge is closest at just over a mile away - this makes a brilliant day's activity. Combine it with a proper walk around the moors or down into Ilkley town itself for lunch. Free to visit, obviously. Go on a clear day or don't bother.
