Tanfield Railway

Steam trains still run on the Tanfield Railway, which is frankly brilliant if you've got a soft spot for Victorian engineering. Near Stanley, this heritage line operates restored locomotives along a stretch of track that once hauled coal from the local pits - proper industrial heritage stuff. You board at Andrews House, the main station, and rattle along for a few miles with genuine period rolling stock. The whole experience takes a couple of hours if you include a potter around the small museum and workshops.

It's a winner for families with kids aged five upwards, though toddlers might fidget if the journey feels slow. Railway enthusiasts will spend ages photographing the engines. History buffs get a real sense of what mining life meant to this region - the track itself follows routes that shaped the landscape.

Admission costs a few quid and trains run most weekends plus school holidays. Book ahead in summer. The experience feels genuinely unpretentious - no corporate polish, just people who care about keeping these machines alive.

Stay at Beamish Holiday Park or splash out on Beamish Glamping nearby, both within a short drive. The railway pairs well with a visit to Beamish Museum itself, which is excellent and covers similar heritage ground. Give yourself half a day here rather than treating it as a flying visit.
