Templandmuir Wood

Deep woodland paths wind through Templandmuir Wood, a proper Renfrewshire forest that doesn't announce itself much but rewards a quiet afternoon. The trees are thick here - oak and birch mostly - and the ground stays soft underfoot even when it's been dry. There's a real sense of stepping away from things, which is the whole point of coming out this direction from Lochwinnoch.

It's walker territory mainly. Families with younger kids might find it a bit too "just trees and more trees" after half an hour or so, but anyone who actually enjoys being in woodland without facilities or marked trails will find it decent. The paths aren't signposted heavily, so you need to know roughly where you're going or be happy to meander. That's either brilliant or annoying depending on what you want from a forest.

Free to wander, obviously. An hour is plenty for most people; two if you're the type who stops to listen. Spring's when the floor comes alive with bluebells and wood anemones. Winter's quieter but the light through bare branches is something else.

If you're staying at The Pods at Auchenhean nearby, this works as a morning's walk before heading into Lochwinnoch itself for lunch. It's not the kind of place you drive hours for, but if you're already in the area exploring the lochs and lowland parks, it's worth the detour for an honest bit of Scottish woodland.
