Thamber Meadow

Thamber Meadow sits quietly in the countryside a few miles outside Haverfordwest, the sort of spot you'd miss entirely if you weren't looking for it. It's a working landscape rather than a manicured attraction - open grassland with the feel of proper rural Pembrokeshire, the kind of place where you can actually breathe. The meadow itself is fairly understated, which is rather the point. You're looking at traditional Welsh farmland that's managed to stay relatively unchanged, the sort of view locals have been walking past for generations.

Walkers and those after a genuine slice of countryside will get more from this than anyone chasing Instagram moments. There's no café, no visitor centre, no queues - just field access and the chance to move at your own pace. The walking is gentle; you could spend an hour here or half that depending on how far you venture. It's particularly good if you've got kids who need to burn off energy without the pressure of a "destination" - they can just run about in actual fields rather than a designated play area.

If you're camping at one of the nearby sites - Brandy Brook is the closest at under three miles, or Nolton Cross at 3.5 miles - Thamber Meadow makes a useful leg-stretcher between longer excursions to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park proper. Free access, no faffing about with opening times. Go early or late to dodge the handful of other visitors. The light's best in late afternoon anyway.
