Hayscastle Tump

There's a small Iron Age fort sitting quietly on the outskirts of Haverfordwest that most visitors to Pembrokeshire walk straight past. Hayscastle Tump is what archaeologists call a promontory fort - essentially an Iron Age settlement that made use of a natural slope to create defendable ground. Today it's just an earthwork, a raised grassy mound with steep sides that's been eroded and softened by centuries of Welsh weather, but if you know what you're looking at, it tells a proper story.

You won't spend hours here. This is a twenty-minute detour at most, ideal if you're staying at Brandy Brook or any of the caravan parks dotted around Newgale. The appeal is really for anyone with a genuine interest in Iron Age Britain - if you're one of those people who enjoys reading the landscape rather than having it explained by a visitor centre, you'll get something from it. Kids under ten will likely lose interest fast unless they're genuinely keen on archaeology.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though opening hours aren't formally advertised because it's just a field monument. Come whenever suits you, though early morning or late afternoon when the light's lower often makes the earthwork's contours easier to spot. It's perfectly decent as a quick stop between longer walks in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park just up the road, but don't expect signposting or facilities. Bring a map or phone with decent offline maps loaded - you'll need them to find it.
