The Ercall Nature Reserve

The Ercall rises abruptly from the Shropshire landscape near Coalbrookdale - a proper unexpected hill that offers walkers something genuinely different from the usual park rambles. It's a Site of Special Scientific Interest, which sounds dry until you realise the geology here is actually fascinating: Precambrian rocks, ancient volcanic material, the lot. The summit walk takes the best part of an hour depending on your pace, and the views across the Severn Valley justify every step.

This isn't a place for idle strollers. The paths are steep in places and can get muddy, so proper footwear matters. But if you've got teenagers keen on getting out properly, or adults who actually want a workout rather than a gentle meander, the Ercall delivers. You'll likely have the place largely to yourself midweek, which is rare enough in the Midlands to be worth mentioning.

The real appeal is how it sits within the broader Ironbridge Gorge area. You can combine it with visits to Irongorge Camping or Sytche Caravan & Camping Park, both excellent bases for exploring the industrial heritage sites below - Coalbrookdale Museum, the Iron Bridge itself, Blists Hill. The Ercall provides the natural counterpoint to all that history. It's free to access and there's no time restriction, so go at whatever pace suits you. Early morning in spring or autumn is genuinely lovely - the light's proper good and the paths are clearer.
