The Park Plantation spreads across decent acreage near Barnard Castle, offering the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Durham in the first place.

It's a straightforward woodland walk - trails wind through mixed planting with enough variation to keep things interesting. The canopy work here is genuine; dappled light on the forest floor, birdsong that isn't drowned out by traffic. On a decent day it's the sort of place where you can lose an hour easily without trying.

Walkers will get proper use from this. Families with younger kids might find it engaging for an hour or so before restlessness sets in - there's walking and trees and not much else, which suits some people completely and others not at all. History types won't find much to grab onto here; this is about the woods themselves, not heritage.

Near Barnard Castle, The Park Plantation sits well within a wider Durham forest holiday. Hewn Yorkshire is close by at just over 5 miles and rates exceptionally well if you need accommodation. Thorpe Farm Centre is nearer but carries mixed reviews, so worth checking current feedback. Bring decent shoes - forest floors stay damp longer than you'd think. No facilities that we're aware of, so plan accordingly. Worth the detour if you're already in the area and want to stretch your legs somewhere with actual woodland atmosphere.
