The Pastures

The Pastures is a proper Norfolk nature reserve just outside King's Lynn, the kind of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick visit. Wet grassland and shallow pools attract wading birds year-round - winter brings lapwings and golden plovers by the thousand, while spring and summer offer breeding populations of avocets and redshanks. The reserve works as a genuine working landscape too, with traditional grazing still happening on parts of it.

Birders will absolutely get the most from it. Bring binoculars and a field guide, and you could easily spend two or three hours picking out different species. Non-twitchers might find it less gripping - it's marshland, fundamentally, and there's no dramatic scenery or built features to break things up. The walking is flat and straightforward, so it suits families with younger children or anyone who can't handle steep terrain, though toddlers might lose interest fairly quickly.

Being within spitting distance of Pinecones Caravan & Camping and the Sandringham site makes it a logical stop if you're based at either park for a few days. The reserve slots nicely between a morning at nearby Sandringham House and an afternoon exploring the North Norfolk coast proper. Bring waterproof boots - it's boggy in wet weather, and that's where the best birds tend to congregate anyway. Winter visits are genuinely worth the detour if you're serious about birdwatching; summer is pleasant enough, just quieter on the avian front.
