Tillyfourie Hill

A modest hill rise that commands proper views across Aberdeenshire farmland - nothing dramatic, but worth the short climb if you're staying nearby. The walk up takes about twenty minutes from the car park, and the path is straightforward enough for families, though it does get boggy in wet weather. Once you're up there, you get decent sight lines toward Deeside and the distant Cairngorms, which is the real payoff.

This is one for walkers passing through rather than a destination in itself. History types might find the Bronze Age cairn at the summit interesting, but it's fairly modest. The biggest appeal is how it breaks up a park holiday - Haughton Holiday Park sits just a few miles south, and Tillyfourie Hill makes an easy afternoon diversion if the weather's decent.

Take proper boots if it's been rainy; trainers will leave your feet soaked. The whole outing, including summit time, runs to roughly an hour. It's free to visit and there are no facilities up top, so bring water. On a clear day you can see why people bothered walking up here centuries ago. On a grey one, you might wonder why you bothered at all. Still, it's the sort of local walk that feels properly Scottish without the tourist crowds.
