Tillyfourie Quarry

The quarry at Tillyfourie is basically a flooded granite pit that's transformed into something rather unexpected - a proper swimming and watersports spot in the middle of Aberdeenshire. The water's clear enough to see why people bother making the trip, and on a decent day it genuinely looks more Mediterranean than Scottish, which is saying something.

It's the kind of place where you'll find families splashing about in summer, walkers stopping for a paddle on the way through, and the occasional serious swimmer treating it like their personal training ground. The granite walls create these dramatic cliffs - not dangerous, just striking - and there's something appealing about the rawness of it all. No manicured edges or theme park nonsense.

The sensible approach is to allow an hour or so, maybe two if you're swimming properly. Water temperature won't impress in winter, but July and August are genuinely lovely. It's free to visit and access seems straightforward, though there's no formal infrastructure to speak of - no café, no changing rooms, so come prepared.

If you're based at Haughton Holiday Park nearby, it's an easy detour worth making. The drive from the main road to Tillyfourie village takes minutes, and you've got a proper spot for a break without fighting crowds. Not Instagram-famous, which is rather the point.
