Hoathybank Wood

The woodland around Battle in Sussex is proper walking territory, and Hoathybank Wood delivers without fuss. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - dense enough to feel like you've left the A21 behind, but not so vast that you'll get lost on a Sunday afternoon.

What you get is a straightforward forest walk through mixed woodland with decent footpaths. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no admission fee holding you up. Just trees, quiet, and the occasional muddy stretch that keeps things real. The wood sits close enough to Battle town centre to be convenient, yet far enough that it genuinely feels like a retreat.

Families with primary-aged kids will get a decent couple of hours here. Older children might find it a bit samey after that - no dramatic views, no water features, no ruins to clamber over. Serious walkers will appreciate it as a warm-up loop rather than a destination. If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Beech Estate is barely a mile away, or Crowhurst Park at 2.7 miles - it's an easy morning sortie without needing the car.

Go midweek if you can, when it's actually peaceful. Weekends pull in the local dog walkers, which is fine, but you lose that sense of escape. Allow 90 minutes for a proper circuit. Wear decent boots - the ground stays damp longer than you'd expect in East Sussex. It won't be the highlight of a Sussex holiday, but as a half-morning option when the weather's cooperating, it beats sitting in Battle town itself.
