Traeth Morfa Bychan / Black Rock Sands

Black Rock Sands stretches for nearly two miles along the Porthmadog coastline, backed by low dunes and fronted by proper firm sand - the kind that doesn't swallow your feet with every step. The beach gets its name from the dark volcanic rock formations that jut out at either end, creating natural barriers that trap shallow pools when the tide retreats. On a clear day you can see across to the Llŷn Peninsula, and the sheer width of the beach means it rarely feels rammed even in peak season.

This is where families come to actually get things done. The firm sand is brilliant for buggies and toddlers learning to walk, and the shallow approach means kids can paddle safely for ages without the water suddenly getting deep. Older children love exploring the rock pools at low tide - there's usually something skittering about in the pools if you look properly. If you're into kite sports, the beach has decent wind exposure and a loyal crowd of kitesurfers and windsurfers.

You'll want to check tide times before heading down - the beach transforms completely depending on the state of the tide. Park in Porthmadog itself and walk down, or use the small car park right at the beach access near the dunes. Allow a good three to four hours if you're proper exploring.

If you're staying at Haven Hafan y Môr Holiday Park just up the coast, this beach is practically on your doorstep - a fifteen-minute stroll from most pitches. It pairs well with walks across Cob Bridge into Porthmadog for fish and chips afterwards.
