Trwyn Du Lighthouse

The lighthouse at Trwyn Du sits on a stubborn little headland just north of Beaumaris, and it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of effort to reach. The walk out takes you through coastal scrub and past decent views across to Snowdonia on clear days, which happens more often than you'd think even in North Wales. The real appeal is the journey rather than anything architectural - the lighthouse is fine, modest really, but the setting is what matters. You get a proper sense of why this spot needs marking for ships passing through the Menai Strait. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for the round trip if you're leisurely about it. The ground can be muddy after rain and it's not wheelchair-friendly, so come prepared. Free to access and no set hours since there's nowhere to close. Go when the light's good - late afternoon works best. If you're staying at Plas Yn Llangoed nearby, it's easily combined with a stroll around Beaumaris itself, where the castle and seafront keep families occupied for longer.
