Tugs The Exhibition

An old pit winding engine dominates the landscape near Alfreton - this is Tugs, a preserved Cornish beam engine that once powered one of Derbyshire's coal mines. It's a proper piece of industrial archaeology, the sort of thing that makes you stop and think about what this landscape used to be before the pits closed down. The engine itself is remarkable if you're into Victorian engineering, all cast iron and mechanical brutality. You can get up close and read the plaques explaining how the whole operation worked - it lifted men and coal from hundreds of metres below ground. Don't expect a slick visitor centre or café. This is grassroots heritage, and that's actually its charm. You're looking at a working relic, not a theme park version of history. It takes maybe 30 minutes to have a proper look around unless you're genuinely fascinated by industrial heritage, in which case you could spend longer examining the details. Free to visit, as far as we can tell - it's that kind of place. Families with young kids might find it a bit abstract unless they're already into engineering or local history. Teenagers and history buffs will get more from it. It's a decent half-hour stop if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Golden Valley and Riddings Wood are both less than two miles away - and it fits well into a broader tour of the area's industrial past. Go when it's dry if possible. The ground can get muddy, and you'll want to see the details properly.
