Waterfall River Shiel

The River Shiel drops with proper force here, a thundering cascade that fills your ears before you've even rounded the bend. It's not a towering drop - maybe 30 feet or so - but what it lacks in height it makes up for in raw power, especially after heavy rain when the entire riverbed churns white.

You'll find this tucked into the Highland landscape near Kyle, where the river cuts through moorland that shifts colour with the seasons. The walk in is straightforward enough, taking maybe 15 minutes on a well-trodden path, though it can get boggy in patches. Worth having proper boots. The waterfall itself is a cracking spot to sit for a bit - there's room to perch on rocks without getting soaked, and the light catches the spray nicely on clear days.

History types will appreciate that this is old droving country; cattle routes and stories run through these glens. Walkers will find it a decent break in a longer route through Kintail. Families with younger kids might get an hour's entertainment here, though teenagers could work through it faster.

It's free, naturally, and worth the short detour if you're camped at Glenshiel nearby - which sits just 4.6 miles away and makes a solid base for exploring this corner of the Highlands. Morning light is best; it cuts through the mist if there is any. Don't expect the postcard drama of somewhere like Steall - this is more intimate, less polished, and none the worse for it.
