Weavers Pit

Walk into Weavers Pit and you're straight into proper Sussex woodland - the sort of place where the air feels thicker and you can actually hear yourself think. It's a forest rather than a managed attraction, so there's no gift shop or café, just trees, clearings, and the occasional surprise of a stream cutting through. The woodland's dense enough to feel genuinely wild despite being close to Heathfield, with decent paths that don't require a map but reward a bit of wandering.

Historically it's the sort of place that tells you something about the landscape - Sussex's industrial past left its mark on these forests, and you get a sense of that walking through. Walkers will find the most value here, particularly those who prefer their countryside unvarnished. It's not a destination that'll keep young children entertained for hours, but families after a proper forest walk with a bit of exploring will do well. You're looking at an hour to ninety minutes to do it justice without rushing.

Heathfield's your nearest town for supplies and a decent pub afterwards. If you're staying at The Secret Campsite five miles away, this makes a natural morning or late afternoon walk - low pressure, no crowds, no admission fees. It's the sort of place you visit to clear your head rather than tick off a box. Worth the detour if woodland walking appeals; less so if you need structured activities or facilities.
