Wenlock's Wood

The woodland around Wenlock's Wood feels properly ancient - walking these paths, you're treading ground that's been forested for centuries. It's a solid patch of Shropshire greenery just outside Coalbrookdale, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think instead of car engines.

What you get here is straightforward: woodland walks, some decent trees, and paths that wind through the sort of landscape that makes you remember why you left the city. The canopy does its job on drizzly days, and if the light's right, it's genuinely lovely underfoot. Kids will manage fine for an hour or so - there's enough to poke about with, though don't expect fairy tale features or signposted adventure trails.

The main appeal is the walking itself. It's the kind of wood where you can stretch your legs properly without it being a full expedition, and the proximity to Coalbrookdale means you're near actual things to do - museums, heritage sites, the whole industrial history angle - if you need more structure.

Stay at Irongorge Camping just down the road (2.6 miles, cracking spot with top reviews) or Sytche Caravan & Camping Park a bit further out, and you've got a proper Shropshire base. The wood works well as a morning or afternoon slot rather than a full day commitment. Free to access, as far as anyone can tell, which is the right price for what amounts to a decent walk through trees. Go when it's not raining sideways and you'll have a decent time of it.
