West Stow Church, St Mary's

St Mary's at West Stow is a proper Suffolk church, all flint and history, sitting quietly near Bury Saint Edmunds. The building itself dates back to the 12th century, though what you'll see today is a mix of medieval work and later repairs - the sort of place where centuries pile up in the stonework. Inside, there's decent medieval woodwork and the church has that genuine working feel, not over-restored into blandness. The churchyard is worth a wander too, with old graves scattered among the yews.

It's ideal if you're doing a walking loop through the village or staying at one of the nearby parks like West Stow Pods or Kings Forest. History types will appreciate the structure and details; families with young children might find it a quick twenty-minute stop rather than a full afternoon. There's no charge to get in, which makes it an easy addition to a day out in the area. Bury Saint Edmunds is close enough for a proper lunch afterwards, and if you're based at West Stow Pods - just a few minutes away - you can slip over early morning or late afternoon when you've got the place to yourself. The light through the windows in late afternoon is particularly good for photography. Allow half an hour if you're genuinely interested in the details, ten minutes if you're just poking your head in. Worth a visit, but not a reason to plan your whole holiday around.
