Whitehill Wood

The moment you step into Whitehill Wood near Hungerford, the noise of the road vanishes. It's proper woodland - the kind with dense cover overhead and a decent network of paths threading through. You won't find visitor facilities or marked trails, but that's rather the point. This is a working forest, and it rewards a bit of exploring on foot.

The wood itself sits just a few miles from Hungerford, making it ideal if you're staying at Lorne Hill Farm or other local accommodation. Walkers get the most from it - there's enough ground to cover in an hour or two without feeling like you're going in circles. Families with young kids might find it a touch underwhelming unless they're keen on actual woodland tramping rather than something with a defined circuit. The canopy coverage means it's brilliant in summer heat, less appealing on wet days when paths turn boggy.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn are lovely here - better light, fewer midges, and the woodland floor becomes genuinely interesting. Allow ninety minutes to two hours if you want to properly explore rather than dash through. There's no admission charge that we can find, and no facilities on site, so bring what you need.

It's a straightforward addition to a Berkshire break - not a major draw on its own, but genuinely worth tackling if you're in the area and fancy proper woodland rather than manicured parkland.
