Willstone Hill

Walking boots required - this is proper hill country where the views earn every step of the climb. Willstone Hill rises above the village of Willstone in gentle Shropshire countryside, offering walkers a decent workout without the drama of more famous peaks.

From the summit, you'll get sweeping views across the Shropshire Hills, though on grey days the landscape can look a bit samey. The walk up takes about 45 minutes at a steady pace, following well-worn sheep tracks through bracken and gorse. It's free walking, obviously, and you can park in Willstone village before heading up.

Families with older children will enjoy the challenge, but it's not pushchair territory and little ones might struggle with the steeper sections. The reward at the top is more about the sense of achievement than any spectacular panorama - this isn't Snowdonia, after all.

If you're staying at one of the nearby camping spots like Mountain Edge Shropshire or Mill Farm Holiday Park, it makes a good morning's exercise before settling in for the afternoon. The hill works well as part of a longer Shropshire walking holiday, though dedicated hikers might find it a bit tame. Best tackled on clear days when you can actually see something from the top.
