Wretched Rabbit

The entrance is easy to miss if you're not looking carefully - just a dark mouth in the limestone hillside near Carnforth, with a stream trickling out. Wretched Rabbit is properly modest compared to the show caves further south, but that's part of its charm. You're crawling through genuine caving territory here, not a tourist funhouse with coloured lights and a gift shop.

It's a straightforward trudge into the hillside, low in places, wider and taller further in. The rock formations are nothing spectacular by cave standards, but there's something satisfying about exploring on your own terms - no guided tour, no crowds, just you and a torch working out which passage to take next. Bring proper kit: torch, helmet if you've got one, and clothes you don't mind getting filthy. The floor stays boggy even after dry spells.

This is for people who actually enjoy caving, not those expecting a Sunday afternoon stroll. Families with older kids who can handle tight squeezes will get a kick out of it. Young children will struggle, and anyone with claustrophobia should stay well clear.

Free admission and a quick fifteen-minute walk from Carnforth town centre makes it an easy add-on to a wider walking day. Pair it with a night or two at Primrose Glamping Pods four miles away - you could loop together a decent Yorkshire cave and limestone walk without breaking the bank. Allow an hour if you're moving carefully and exploring the deeper passages.
