Y Bengam

Standing at 633 metres above sea level, this lesser-known peak offers a proper workout for those willing to venture beyond the crowded tourist trails around Porthmadog. The climb up Y Bengam isn't for Sunday strollers - it's a steep ascent that'll have you questioning your fitness levels, but the views from the top are well worth the effort.

Walkers with decent experience will get the most from this one. The path can be boggy in places, particularly after rain, so waterproof boots are essential. From the summit, you'll get cracking views across the Glaslyn estuary and out towards the coast - much better than the overhyped spots that everyone else queues up for.

Allow a good three to four hours for the round trip, longer if you're carrying a packed lunch and fancy taking your time at the top. Weather can change quickly up here, so pack layers even on what looks like a decent day.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Black Rock Sands or Haven Greenacres, this makes for a brilliant day out that'll tire the kids enough to guarantee an early bedtime. Just make sure they're confident on their feet - this isn't a gentle ramble.
