Y Boncyn

Standing at 1,496 feet above sea level, this modest but rewarding peak offers proper views across Cardigan Bay and the Snowdonia foothills without the crowds that plague its more famous neighbours. The walk up from Porthmadog takes about 90 minutes through rough grassland and rocky outcrops - nothing too technical, but you'll want decent boots as it gets boggy after rain.

Families with older children will manage fine, though the youngest might grumble about the steep sections near the top. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn and provides excellent photo opportunities on clear days, with Harlech Castle visible to the south and the peaks of Snowdonia stretching north.

What makes Y Boncyn particularly appealing is its accessibility from the holiday parks around Black Rock Sands and Porthmadog. It's free to climb, obviously, and you can easily fit it into a morning before heading to the beach. The descent takes about an hour, leaving plenty of time for ice cream in Porthmadog.

Dog walkers love this route as there's no livestock to worry about higher up, and the views reward the effort without requiring a full day's commitment. Pack layers though - the wind can be fierce up top even when it's calm down in town.
