Yell Wood

The woodland around Yell isn't going to take your breath away with dramatic vistas, but there's something honest about it. Walk through and you'll find yourself among decent-sized trees, proper forest floor underfoot, and the sort of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Shropshire in the first place. It's the kind of spot where you notice things - birdsong, light filtering through the canopy, the occasional clearing where the ground flattens out.

This works best for people who like their walks low-key and unmapped. Children under eight might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes, but older kids who are into nature will get on fine. Dog walkers clearly rate it - you'll see their routes all over the place. History buffs won't find much here, so if you're chasing Tudor houses or Iron Age forts, look elsewhere.

You can wander in free and spend as little or as much time as you want. Two hours is realistic if you're not rushing. The nearest town is Ellesmere, which sits about twenty minutes away by car and has a decent little lake and tea shop if you fancy sorting lunch before or after. If you're staying at Lower Lacon Caravan Park - only 6 miles down the road - this makes an easy morning outing before heading off to somewhere with more going on. It's not a destination in itself, but paired with the local area, it does the job well enough.
